Demographic developments pose enormous challenges for the housing sector and housing markets. The demand for housing is growing continuously. At the same time, climate protection is one of the most fundamental issues of our time. Global warming, resource consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are putting a strain on the environment. Buildings and infrastructure are responsible for around 40 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

‘Timber construction could be used to reverse this and store atmospheric carbon in the built environment, so to speak. In this way, we can help to repair the climate,’ climate impact researcher Prof Hans Joachim Schellnhuber is convinced. In society and politics, however, there are still prejudices against timber construction, ignorance of its advantages and doubts about its potential.

The 1st International Timber Construction Symposium will focus on the following questions in presentations and discussions:

• How can we succeed in creating affordable living space in a timely manner and thereby actively protect the climate?
• What contribution can timber construction in particular make to this?
• Do we have sufficient resources to build even more with renewable raw materials?
• What political framework conditions are necessary to promote building with wood as part of sustainable construction?
